The problem with Ether right now for investors

While the supply of bitcoin is slowing after the halving , the supply of ether is growing at its fastest rate since 2022, according to CryptoQuant – crushing some investor's dreams of ether as an asset that would grow increasingly scarce. The median transaction fee is about 4x lower now that it was before Dencun for the same level of network activity. Some investors had hoped ether could compete with bitcoin, whose rate of supply growth slows every four years after the halving. For many, that idea was a side effect of the primary thesis on Ethereum, which sees it as a growing, scalable transaction network on which to build applications. Network activity would have to increase 3 to 4x to reverse the growing supply trend, if this relationship holds, he said.

Now, get ready for the "kimchi premium," named after the popular side dish of fermented vegetables that's a staple in Korean cuisine. The "kimchi premium" refers to the price gap in cryptocurrencies, especially bitcoin, when listed in South Korea versus those listed in U.S. or European exchanges. The kimchi premium is in the spotlight again after bitcoin reached all-time highs in mid-March, soaring past $73,000 to a record high on March 13, according to Coin Metrics data. According to cryptocurrency data provider Cryptoquant, the Korea Premium Index reached its highest level since May 2021 on March 16, reaching 10.88%. That means bitcoin's trading price in South Korea was roughly 10% higher than the global spot price.

Bitcoin fell for a second day to start the new month and quarter, amid rising Treasury yields and strength in the U.S. dollar. Data from CryptoQuant shows a spike in that exchange's reserves, which typically signals a boost in selling activity, that coincides with the sudden drop in bitcoin price late Monday night. Crypto exchange Coinbase fell 4%, while software provider MicroStrategy , which largely trade as a proxy for the price of bitcoin, lost nearly 7%. Investors are looking toward the bitcoin halving – which will slash the reward, and therefore revenue, of bitcoin miners – in the second half of the month. The event could hurt the performance of miners but historically has set bitcoin up for rallies of 300% or more in the months that follow.

The most important driver in second quarter for bitcoin and crypto, however, could be the Federal Reserve decision on interest rate cuts. Traders are now pricing in a roughly 61% chance of a first Fed rate cut taking place in June, according to the CME FedWatch Tool . Demand has increased from 40,000 bitcoin at the start of the year to 213,000 bitcoin currently, largely driven by ETF buying ahead of the late April Bitcoin halving, according to CryptoQuant. However, the SEC's decision on whether or not to allow spot ether ETFs to trade, due in May, will "very likely" be market moving, he added. "If it's not priced in today, then it very likely will be a market moving event if it happens," he said.

Like tech stocks, bitcoin sometimes benefits from low interest rates and improved market liquidity, which can lead to better sentiment and greater investment in growth assets. Stock Chart Icon Stock chart icon Bitcoin turns higher after two days of losses"There has been an inverse relationship between rates and bitcoin price," said Oppenheimer executive director Owen Lau. "When the Fed increased interest rates in 2022, it took out liquidity from the market, which impacted bitcoin and tech stocks. When the Fed cuts rates, it provides liquidity to the market, which should benefit risky assets such as bitcoin. The Dow Jones Industrial Average , S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite all closed at record highs after the Fed meeting wrapped up.

The Ethereum network successfully completed its "Dencun" upgrade on Wednesday, which is meant to help it become faster and cheaper to use. The price of ether has been trading lower since then, which was expected based on the cryptocurrency's behavior following previous tech upgrades. "High activity on the Ethereum network has caused high transaction fees and, consequently, more fees burnt," Julio Moreno, CryptoQuant's head of research, said in a note Wednesday. High transaction activity causes network fees to spike, more fees being burnt and total supply to decrease." They're hoping that the combination of increased activity and the decrease in the supply of ether over time will push the token's price higher.

A big selling point of bitcoin exchange-traded funds was their potential to reduce bitcoin's notorious volatility over time. He pointed to funding rates for bitcoin futures contracts, which have soared recently to levels not seen since early 2021. Additionally, open interest, or the number of open positions for a bitcoin futures contract, is at all-time highs. "Realized crypto [volatility] will likely ease as funding rates normalize," Glass said. "Those recurring inflows could dampen volatility of large moves from momentum strategies which basically chase price up and down and amplify swings."

Bitcoin tops $65,000 as it nears 2021 all-time high

Earlier, it rose to as much as $65,658.10, its highest level since November 2021. The price of bitcoin rose to start the week, edging even closer to its all-time high after the rally took a breather over the weekend. "What we're seeing today ... might well be a rerun of early last week when bitcoin surged $10,000 in the space of a couple of days. Investors have been extra eager to see bitcoin approach its all-time high. Nevertheless, long-term investors are confident that the combination of increasing demand for bitcoin through the new U.S. exchange-traded funds and a tighter supply expected after the April halving event will push the price of bitcoin to a new all-time high.

With bitcoin on a hot streak this past week, investors should brace themselves for a cooling in March. "But cash inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs are accelerating, and that seems to have been overpowering those technical signals." Although Bitcoin traded above $62,000 to end the week, it's realized price was down at the $42,000 level, according to CryptoQuant. CryptoQuant also showed the cost of opening new long positions in the futures market spiked in the recent rally, which historically signals a coming correction in the bitcoin price. Ether, however, has ended the month higher in six of the last eight March's since its inception, with an average gain on the month of 25%.

The stablecoin market cap is growing again, which is a good sign for crypto market liquidity, but it hasn't fully recovered and could face regulatory challenges this year, according to JPMorgan. Stablecoins expanded by $60 billion between their May 2022 peak and their October 2023 low of $122 billion. But as investors anticipated the Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in the U.S., the market expanded by $9 billion between October 2023 and January 2024. This is generally a "positive sign" for crypto, according to JPMorgan analyst Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou. Despite bitcoin's stellar 157% gain in 2023 and nearly ideal setup for 2024, the crypto market has been struggling with low liquidity since last year.

Cryptocurrencies tumbled on Thursday, with bitcoin falling back to $40,000. Bitcoin last traded lower by 3.6% at $41,167.14, according to Coin Metrics. The move in bitcoin weighed on crypto-related stocks, too. "We are still in the correction post-ETF launch," said Julio Moreno, head of research at crypto data provider CryptoQuant. "Short-term traders and large bitcoin holders are still doing significant selling in a context of a risk-off attitude," he added.

Shares of Robinhood fell Wednesday after the retail brokerage reported a drop in trading volumes in the last quarter and said it's looking to expand growth in Europe. Robinhood also reported fewer monthly active users, which fell 16% to 10.3 million in the third quarter from the same period last year. Although third-quarter revenue rose 29% to $467 million, it fell short of the $480 million analysts were predicting. Revenue was hurt by a 13% decline in third-quarter transaction revenue tied to stock trading, compared with the same period last year. The drop in trading coincides with rising treasury yields –with the 10-year Treasury yield topping 5% just last month – that have been weighing on equities.

It's becoming clear that investor apathy in this year's crypto market is starting to hurt Coinbase , according to Mizuho analysts. The crypto exchange's trading volume historically has been influenced by moves in the price of bitcoin . Mizuho maintains its underperform rating and $27 price target on Coinbase shares. Bitcoin trading volume across spot crypto exchanges is about in line with levels from Aug. 30, according to CryptoQuant. The price of bitcoin has remained stagnant in recent weeks despite having several positive developments in the same period on the regulatory and ETF fronts.

Altcoin trading is limping along, despite initially getting a boost from a key July court ruling that gave Ripple a partial victory over the Securities and Exchange Commission. However, this is not a strong enough narrative to take over the broader theme of deterioration in crypto market structure, said Park added. "This has serious implications for altcoin trading, as the shift in focus to alternatives like FDUSD or TUSD has created a bottleneck for pairs trading that is often how altcoin liquidity is gauged and accessed," he added. "At its peak, there were over 300 BUSD trading pairs and the number is steadily decreasing as BUSD is ceasing its operations." Wolfe Research's Rob Ginsberg noted this week that weak price action and low trading volume largely define the trading of altcoins in the current market.

Late Thursday, the companies announced that Coinbase had taken a minor equity stake in Circle, which includes a 50/50 revenue share of interest income going forward. "Centre will no longer exist as a stand-alone entity and Circle will remain as the issuer of USDC, bringing any Centre governance and operations responsibilities in-house." The U.S. stablecoin market has been held back by regulatory uncertainty this year, and the market cap for USDC has dropped nearly 42% since the start of the year, according to CryptoQuant. "All else is in fact not equal as [the] USDC market cap has drifted lower through 2Q23 and interest rates are subject to change." "The Circle equity stake deepens COIN's exposure to a dwindling asset class … casting doubt about the standalone business model of stablecoins."

Bitcoin is up more than 75% this year, but the market capitalization for stablecoins has dwindled during the same period. "This is unusual as often the market capitalization of stablecoin increases during rallies and decreases during downturns, matching the trend of the overall crypto market," JPMorgan analyst Steven Alexopoulos said in a note Thursday. "An explanation for the decline of the stablecoin market may be due to investors preferring the higher returns of bitcoin and Ethereum or even traditional assets (benefiting from a rise in interest rates)." In July, it hit an all-time high of $83.8 billion and now accounts for 68.5% of the overall stablecoin market. Tether's prominence Instead of focusing on declines in USDC, investors could point to Tether's growth as evidence of stablecoin inflows, for example.

Ether , which has joined bitcoin in recent months as a sort of large cap, blue-chip trade in crypto, was down by 1.4%, after finishing July down by 3.35%. It was under extra pressure due to a recent exploit in DeFi giant Curve, however. Whenever investors hear the word hack ... it puts the whole crypto market on the backfoot and that's what's happening here," Gilbert said. Bitcoin volumes have also dropped significantly from their recent highs and have failed to reclaim them despite the price of bitcoin showing so much resilience this year. July 25 - XRP has become the unlikely white knight of crypto, thwarting its regulatory foes and dragging the market out of the doldrums.
